Abstract: A Doppler lidar can measure wind profiles in the atmosphere with excellent accuracy. Lidars are proposed for spaceborne application. The backscatter lidar technology experiment in space LITE was successfully tested in 1994. A Doppler lidar in space can give both, wind and backscatter information. Existing spaceborne instruments to measure wind velocity over sea are proposed for a synergetic application together with the planned Doppler lidar.!22
