The design of a device that provides over 50 percent range reduction for a 155-mm artillery projectile is discussed. ^The mechanical design of a spoiler plate used to increase drag is discussed. ^A complete set of 3D, time-dependent, Reynolds-averaged, thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations is solved numerically to obtain a solution for the zero angle of attack aerodynamics of a 155-mm projectile with protruding circular ring (spoiler plate) located at the nose. ^A simulated trajectory of the calculated aerodynamics is compared to radar data measured during flight. ^Issues concerning kinematics, stability, and overall performance are discussed. ^(Author)
