The MCM-41 family of surfactant templated materials were used as model mesoporous sorbents for storage of light hydrocarbon vapors, by utilizing the phenomenon of capillary condensation.The experimental data show that, because of the fine tunability of MCM-41 type materials (mesopore diameter was controlled between 20 and 40 A), the onset of capillary condensation can be controlled, and from here the point of achieving liquid-like fluid density in the pores. Such a unique characteristic makes the MCM-41 family of materials a potential media for sorptive fractionation.
