This paper presents the results of the runner upgrade and rehabilitation of eight pump/turbines at the Muddy Run Powerhouse. The study addresses the modern optimized designs including upgraded runners, wicket gates, head covers, turbine guide bearings and stay vane modification. While the driving force behind the upgrade was increased performance, concerns over the reliability of the existing components also supported the project. After extensive competitive model test Voith Hydro was awarded this project in 1994. Start-up of the first two units is expected in February 1997.
