As part its ongoing Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant upgrade program, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) considered the replacement of the generator field poles. Both torque and centrifugal loads which the poles must resista are being increased. Extensive analyses by consultants, manufacturers and Power Authority engineers left doubt on the adequacy of the end caps, in part because of unavailable manufacturing details from the 1950s. The unavailable information included stud prestress levels, material properties and the friction factor applicable between end cap liminations - the basic data an engineer must know to evaluate a structure.
