An experimental approach for the study of atmospheric aerosol nucleation using a combination of two experimental techniques designed for gas-phase analysis is presented. The first technique is the use of the laminar flow tube reactor (LFTR), which allows modeling of the atmospheric conditions inside the reactor tube and therefore allows investigation of particle formation processes from the gas phase. The second uses a mass-spectrometer with atmospheric pressure ionization (MSAPI), which allows direct atmospheric measurement of the gas phase concentration of various atmospheric contaminants. Such a combination allows us to study the nucleation process under controllable and low concentrations of various components (e.g., for ammonia, a common atmospheric contaminant, as low as 10~(-13)-10~(14) g/cm~3).
