NEDO now supports R&D of a Superconductive Generation Equipment and Materials (Super-GM), and a High Temperature Superconducting Flywheel ENergy Storage System (HTSFES) because (1) application of superconducting technologies will enhance energy efficiency, increases the stability of the electric power system and reduces electricity cost substantially, and (2) the risk and cost will be too big. The projects are so far satisfactory.The introduction of superconducting electric power apparatuses in actual electric power system, however will require a verification of the reliability more stringent than other apparatuses as the electric power system is a highly developed stable system, but once they are introduced, impacts both on the efficiency and the cost of electricity will be significant.
