Steady State and Dynamic Analysis of Tilting Pad Journal Bearings Using Global Approach

In high speed rotating machinery such as turbines and power generators, tilting pad journal bearings are being increasing used to avoid bearing instability problems. This paper presents the theory and results from a source program which has been developed for tilting pad journal bearing calculations using a finite element technique. The present approach is based on the numerical solution of a two dimensional Reynolds equaltion which considers temperature and viscosity changes with consideration of heat transfer effects. The Reynolds, Energy and Fourier Equations are solved simultaneously at each step of iteration and the local viscosity is determined by the Vogel Cameron equation. Global analysis approach is used for the total bearing analysis and parametric studies have been carried out under steady state and dynamic conditions.
