A comparative study of the industrial exploitation methods for stone slabs in italian quarries

The paper, after a synthetic account of the geologic-petrographic features of the exploitable bodies, of the requirements of the end products and of the end uses and marketing, describes and analyses the most common extraction techniques employed in important Italian quarry basins. Typical case histories are shortly presented; exploitation design criteria and production results are compared. methods range from cautious blasting to mechanical splitting, often combiend with mechanicla cutting. Materials exploited are slaty quarizites, blackboard slate, fissile gneiss and schists, fissile porphysroid, slaty porphyry, with a wide range of mechanical and geo-structural features. In the concluding remarks, the most conspicuous achievements of the modernisation underway of the production methods in this sector are outlined.
