In future WDM networks, wavelength conversion will provide the flexibility needed to build wavelength interchangeable optical cross-connect switches, which can reduce blocking probability and enable decentralized wavelength allocation management. Cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in an interferometric configuration is now considered to be the most practical all-optical wavelength conversion scheme, because of its conversion efficiency, extinction ratio enhancement, and low low chirp characteristics [1]. Here, we demonstrate a polarization insensitive interferometric wavelengh converter with monolithically integrated source.
