Wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) transmission systems require erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) with controlable gain and output power to optimize the signal to noise ratio and manage nonlinear interactions. The gain spectrum of conventional EDFAs is dependent on the absolute gain at a particular wavelength. As the gain of an EDFA changes there is a change in slope of the gain spectrum.
