Insights From Risk-Informed Inservice Inspection Evaluation of a Bwr Pilot Plant

To provide guidelines for practical implementation of risk-based ISI, EPRI sponsored work to develop evaluation procedures and criteria for defining risk-informed inservice inspection (RIISI)programs for nuclear power plant piping. These procedures and criteria include the means to identify risk significant piping segments, inspection locations, and appropriate inspection techniques. These procedures were applied in pilot studies to assess the feasibility of successfully implementing risk-based inservice inspection programs at nuclear plants. This paper will present the results of a program conducted at a BWR plant. This plant-specific evaluation is one of three pilot evaluations being conducted as part of the RIISI initiative. These efforts are being reviewed by the USNRC in support of the development of the risk informed Standard Review Plan (SRP) and Regulatory Guide (RG). In addition, ASME code cases are under development that are using these plant evaluations as demonstration studies for future code action. The goal of the overall effort was to develop a new and improved inservice inspection program.
