In a fixed wireless access system, due to its nature serving as a wireless local loop, each subscriber is typically configured to a specific cell on a permanent basis. For a subscriber located at the interior of the cell, identified as the home cell subscriber, the probability of receiving the signal coverage is high. But to a subscriber located at the border of several overlapping cells, identified as the border cell subscriber, the subscriber may not receive signal coverage due to the cell shrinking phenomenon, resulting in unsuccessful call setup. This problem can be resolved by configuring multiple serving cells to the border cell subscriber. During the initial installation of the system, the signal levels received at the subscriber's location from the neighboring cells are collected. Depending on the regions into which the received signal levels fall, a subscriber can be identified as a home cell subscriber where only one serving cell is to be configured; or as a border cell subscriber where multiple serving cells could be configured. Configuring multiple serving cells would provide the border cell subscribers in a fixed wireless access system with enhanced probability of receiving RF coverage and reduced probability of blocking.
