Arrangement in an access system for configuring subscriber lines in a network of digital access, method for configuring subscriber lines in a digital access network, and the system of access to configure subscriber lines in a network of digital access. An access network (NWI) has nodes (N1, N2, N3) and a controller (NCI). The network is for copper lines (L1...L4) connected to subscribers (S1...S4), which may have a TV (TV1), a telephone (Ph1) and a computer (PC1). The copper lines (L1...L4), which have a limited transmission capacity, are configured by a configuration tool (CT1). A problem is to configure the copper line (L1...L4) to take all of the services of video, voice and data with acceptable quality without using excess capacity of the line. Parameters for the current lines (L1...L4) are therefore monitored automatically by a monitoring tool (MT1).Thresholds are set for the performance parameters of line, such as the stability of the line and packet loss, and are compared by the monitoring tool with the corresponding values. Based on the comparison, preliminary values for configuration parameters of the line to a line, such as bit rate are generated.Attempts of different configuration are compared and a parameter value of the selected configuration is subsequently sent to the configuration tool (CT1). The last reconfigures the lines (L1...L4) and the process is repeated continuously.
