Rock Slope Landslide with Swelling Behavior

Landslide generally brings landscape damages and environmental changes. In green tuff areas of Japan, landslide disasters frequently appear in spring due to deposited snow. Some of landslide cases are rock slide type parted bentonitic clay seam which shows swelling phenomena. Swelling of rock and soils ofen causes goetechnical troubles. However, swelling behavior is not well analyzed, swelling is complicated due to the number of unknowns and obscure factors involved. Owing to investigate the landslide safety, several swelling tests were performed with a newly developed swelling apparatus. From the test results, a constitutive equation on swelling behavior was derived. Then the equation was applied to investigate the rock slope landslide deformations. A reasonable agreement was found that the swelling behavior of landslide with bentonitic clay in green tuff areas cant't be disregarded when the landslide safety is estimated.
