On the basis of the compressive-shear fracture behaviour of rock mass cotaining intermittent joints, the strength anisotropy of this kind of rock mass is discussed in the paper. The currently used Hoek-Brown criterion to evaluate the strength of the rock mass is demonstrated quantitatively to be determined by the strength of rock bridges and joint surfaces of the jointed rock mass. The influences of the orientation, length and spatial arrangement of joints on the strength anisotropy are discussed quantitatively. The method to evaluate the parameters m and s in Hoek-Brown criterion is presented in the paper.
