Based On soil property and limit equilibrium theory, the relation between the rising of groundwater table and the decrease of bearing capacity of the shallow sandy and clayey soil foundation is discussed in this paper, it is found that the value of bearing capacity will decrease as much as 70percent for sandy soil as the groundwater table rises. A approach to determine the maximum influence depth has also been given.
