Abstract: The effect of pre-chirping on soliton switching dynamics in nonlinear directional coupler using the direct numerical solution of the system of nonlinear Schrodinger equation is considered. It is found that the initial pulse chirp dramatically change transmission characteristics. As a rule, switching of a down-chirped pulse occurs at a higher critical power. Switching of weekly up-chirped pulse occurs at a lower critical power. The effect of pre-chirping of a week control pulse on transmission characteristics is studied and the possibility of chirp-controlled switching is investigated. It is less effective than phase-controlled switching. A symmetry-breaking instability for chirped pluses is studied. It is found that intensive energy exchange takes place even the pulse amplitudes are below instability threshold. The influence of polarization state on the switching of a chirped pulse is investigated. !11
