Abstract: Amid the areas of application that the military hasidentified to transfer its technologies to is that ofthe law enforcement where they are interested in theapplication of different types of imaging sensors, particularly the millimeter wave sensors, to thedetection of weapons concealed underneath clothing. Inorder to detect concealed weapons underneath clothing,it is important for the sensor to (1) have a good heavyclothing penetration, (2) operate at a reasonable longrange and (3) display data in a near real time. Becausethese three prerequisites cannot be accomplishedsimultaneously, we introduce in this work a signalprocessing stage referred to as the AutomatedStatistical Characterization and Partitioning ofEnvironments procedure (A'SCAPE), to be located betweenthe data collection and the data display stages of thesensor in order to enhance the collected data before itis displayed. In this paper advantages andinconveniences of passive millimeter-wave sensors arediscussed, A'SCAPE is described and an illustratingexample is presented. !15
