Review of treatment of upper airway obstruction caused by various masses both malignant and nonmalignant in the horse using transendoscopic Nd:YAG laser application for treatment
Abstract: A computer search and review of surgery logs, laserlogs and case records was conducted to determine thenumber of horses that were presented and treated forupper respiratory abnormalities. This reportconcentrated on equine cases that had malignant andnonmalignant disease and whether the use of a laseraffected the outcome. The report concluded thatneoplastic or malignant cases were presented late inthe course of the disease to be successfully treatedbut their demographics were helpful in distinguishingthem from nonmalignant cases that had similarendoscopic findings and clinical signs. Having lasercapability for treatment of nonmalignant diseasesimproved the success rate achieved with some diseasesand influenced the selection of treatment, conventionalsurgery versus standing transendoscopic laserirradiation of the lesions. !19
