Abstract: There are optical devices compatible with computers,which make it possible to decode the fringe patternsobtained by various optical techniques such as:holographic interferometry, the method ofphotoelasticity, the moire method, etc. in thesemi-automatic regime. As it often happens in Russiasuch expensive equipment is not available at researchand educational institutions but they possess quite alarge number of computers and standard peripheraldevices for them. Referring to the above mentioned theauthors have developed a technique of fringe patternsdecoding bases on the use of standard hardware and onthe integrated system of automation of mathematical andengineering calculations MathCad 2.01. Applying thegiven technique the authors used the following devices:IBM PC AT 386SX CPU 33.3 MHz, ScanJet HP (HewlettPackard Corp.). The errors of this technique have beeninvestigated as well as the range of its application.The technique is illustrated by the examples ofdecoding of holographic interferograms, moire andphotoelastic patterns. !6
