Abstract: Recent scientific studies evaluating laser energy fortissue welding and thermokeratoplasty have demonstratedthat the application of laser energy at non-ablativelevels can alter collagen's structural and biochemicalproperties. A recent pilot study has demonstrated thatthe non-ablative application of holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) laser energy to thejoint capsule of patients with glenohumeral instabilityshrank the joint capsule, stabilizing the shoulder inthe majority of the patients treated. Based on thecollective findings of these studies, we hypothesizedthat thermal modification of dense collagenous tissuessuch as joint capsule, ligament, and tendon can beachieved by applying non-ablative laser energy. Thepurpose of this study was to evaluate the effect oflaser energy at non-ablative levels on joint capsularmechanical, biochemical, histological, andultrastructural properties in an in vitro rabbitmodel.!0
