Application of the Nd:YAG laser to intracranial tumor operations

Abstract: From January 1989 to December 1993, in the NeurosurgeryDepartment of Mine Hospital in Sosnowiec, a Nd:YAGmediLas 4060 N (MBB) laser with the radiationwavelength of 1.064 micrometer was used for operationof 104 patients with intracranial neoplasm. Fifty-fivepatients were operated on without any use of the Nd:YAGlaser. The coagulation capabilities of the Nd:YAG madeit possible to achieve the hemostasis sooner and morecertainly that brought an opportunity operate in a dryfield. The shrinkage of a tumor, especially in thecases of meningioma and metastases, facilitated theirpreparation to a great extent. Removal of a lesion tookplace with negligible mechanical damage of thesurrounding cerebral tissue. The Nd:YAG laser isparticularly useful in the cases of well vascularizedbrain meningiomas; in this way larger tumors can beremoved radically with milder postoperational courseand good results of therapy were achieved significantlymore frequently than in the control group. It wasclearly demonstrated with significantly less frequentbouts of consciousness disturbance and pareses. Theapplication of this Nd:YAG laser does not influenceupon the postoperational course, the tumor regrowth andthe number of persons with the expanding processrecurrence in the glioma cases. !92
