1. In spite of the low rainfall, present-day diffuse (if episodic) rain and localized surface water recharge to the phreatic aquifer is occurring over the entire study area.2. There is evidence of palaeorecharge to the confined aquifer, possibly resulting from Yellow River transgressions during the last glaciation.3. There is no evidence of enhanced recharge to the aquifers of the plain, either from runoff infiltration into alluvial fans in the northwest, nor from the Yellow River in the southeast.
