Performance characterization of the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) engineering model

Abstract: The MODIS instrument is currently under development at Hughes Aircraft Company, Santa Barbara Research Center. The MODIS is scheduled to fly on the Earth Observing System suite of spacecraft with the first launch in mid 1998. The MODIS engineering model (EM) was completed in May of 1995 and has undergone extensive performance characterization testing. This paper covers the highlights of that testing. Results from engineering model (EM) tests demonstrate that the MODIS instrument will meet its performance objectives, offering excellent radiometric, spatial, and spectral performance while maintaining high precision and accuracy over the mission life. !2
