Abstract: In 1998 the National Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration (NASA) will launch the first of a seriesof Earth Observation System (EOS) spacecraft designedto study the environment. The moderate resolutionimaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) is a key EOSinstrument. Current plans are to fly a series of sixMODIS instruments on the EOS-AM and -PM satelliteseries. The operational life span for the EOS effort isfifteen years (1998 - 2012). Processing the data fromthe EOS platform and the MODIS instrument will requirestate of the art jumps in computing, storage and localand wide area networks. The continuous raw data ratefrom MODIS will average 10 megabits per second orapproximately 110 gigabytes per day. The total productstorage capacity for the MODIS data and products isestimated to be 650 gigabytes (GB) per day and 230terrabytes (TB) per year. This paper focuses on theTeam Leader Computing Facility (TLCF) which will beused to develop, integrate, optimize, test and validatethe operational versions of the MODIS software.Approaches that achieve the high network bandwidth andhigh performance computing are needed to support MODISsoftware development and testing on global MODIS datasets. Candidate technologies are evaluated in light ofthe above requirements on the TLCF. !13
