Abstract: The high brightness, high intensity, and pulsedtime-structure of synchrotron sources provide newopportunities for time-resolved x-ray diffractioninvestigations. With third generation synchrotronsources coming online, high brilliance and highbrightness are now available in x- ray beams with thehighest flux. In addition to the high average flux, theinstantaneous flux available in synchrotron beams isgreatly enhanced by the pulsed time structure, whichconsists of short bursts of x-rays that are separatedby approximately tens to hundreds of nanoseconds.Time-resolved 1D and 2D position sensitive detectiontechniques that take advantage of synchrotron radiationfor materials science x-ray diffraction ivestigationsare presented, and time resolved materials scienceapplications are discussed in terms of recentdiffraction and spectroscopy results and materialsresearch opportunities. !22
