Abstract: Fiber Bragg gratings are attracting increasing attention as sensors for the measurement of strain, temperature, and pressure. They are equally important as wavelength selective reflectors for fiber, and to a lesser extent, semiconductor lasers. This paper describes results from a hybrid laser comprising of a semiconductor optical amplifier coupled to a Bragg grating, and investigates the characteristics of such a laser system as a discrete strain sensor. !4
