摘要

Confined or virtually closed habitats such as the permanently-manned Space Station or manned planetary missions present unique microbiological issues and challenges. A central issue is the monitorign of the effectriveness of sterilization of reclaimed water. A second issue is monitoring potable water in holding tanks for maintenance of a "microbefree" condition. Standards for safe levels of microbial contamination of potable water for manned space mission continue to evolve. Regardless of the standards that will ultimately be adopted, there will be a need for rapid, specific, sensitive, inexpensive, light weight, and reliable methods to monitor microbiological water quality.
