The primary function of the resource recovery components to be included int eh KSC-CELSS breadboard project is to process various CELSS waste streams (i.e., crop residues, crew organic wastes, food processing wastes, gray-water, airborne trace organic contaminants) to recycle elements and to produce additional food. A secondary goal is to detoxify potentially hazardous (to plants as well as crew) compounds during processing. In keeping with the biological orientation of the KSC-CELSS breadboard charter, a variety of biological-based systems have been identified as potential candidates that could accomplish these goals. At this stage, the technology transfer process is reversed, with already established earth-based technologies being evaluated.
