Long range goals for the space program include the establishment of a man-tended lunar base and human expedition to Mars as a stepping stone towards expansion of humanity into space. The requirements of the crew drives the design and operation of the Environmental control closed loop Life Support System (ECLSS). Our endeavor here has been to quantify the demand on the Air Revitalization System (ARS), which is responsible for maintaining unfirom inspired air composition int eh cabin. We propose to do this by developing a detailed analytical model of the human pulmonary system. This model can provide a breath by breath account of carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange, taking into account the effects of weightlessness and moderate exercise on the pulmonary system.
