Choosing among applicants for aviation duty from a pool of high-functioning, accomplished individuals is a difficult task. Select-out criteria, or eliminating applicants with a psychiatric diagnosis, results in the identification of an impaired subset of the candidate pool, but does not suggest who is the most qualified or adapted applicant. Select-in methods determine who is best suited for challenging tasks, but does not screen well for psychopathology. Psychometric data on successful aviators and other professionals, particularly those who fly aboard aircraft requiring high degrees of crew co-ordination, are historically very limited.
