In order to understand the behavior of rod-reinforced structures, hat-section single stringer segments were tested in compression. A three-step global-local finite element modeling approach was used to predict the stresses and displacements in the stringer. Using a Maximum Stress failure criterion, compatible constituent strengths were applied at each of the three levels of modeling in order to predict failure. The application of laminate-level in-plane allowables to the global model results was found to most accurately predict structural response. For this reason, it is suggested that orthotropic plate elements be used in future load/stress analyses of rod-reinforced hatsection structures.
