Privatisation of the companies responsible for the distribution systems in the UK has brought in to sharp focus the development of effective long term planning and operation strategies. To ensure that the distribution networks continue to produce acceptable return on investments means that companies need to seek to minimise the whole life costs of switchgear and associated equipment. This must include the cost of purchase, installation, operation and maintenance through to it's ultimate replacement. This paper reviews some of the past innovations, identifies potential areas for future innovations and the possible drivers necessary to meet the challenge for innovation in distribution switchgear.
