A barbed plate electrostatic precipitator has been designed to provide a more uniform current density distribution and electric field in the inter-electrode gap. Particle motion in the novel precipitator is observed via a laser light-sheet and measured with a laser Doppler velocimeter. Results indicate that turbulence is more uniformly distributed in the barbed plate precipitator than in a wire-plate precipitator and that transverse particle velocities are higher in the barbed plate precipitator. Additionally, large scale secondary flows are observed in the wire-plate precipitator, but not the barbed plate precipitator.
