摘要

A preliminary evaluation of the suitability of data product from a currently operational satellite, namely, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) as a basis for providing information on land-cover characteristics for a GCM has been undertaken by examining three different classification strategies. The first two methods characterise land-cover in terms of temporal behaviour of the cover classes while the last method is based on the relationship between the NDVI and rainfall. Results are encouraging in regard to its usefulness as a means of representing land surface suitable for input to climate modelling. Although the present study is regional in nature the ultimate aim in the work is global classification of land-cover characteristics.
