Using active learning to teach creative thinking on the job: A mechanical engineering example

A senior-level course in mechanical engineering at Penn State that employs active learning to promote creative thinking is described. The course features innovative group design projects with an emphasis on preparing students to think creatively in the workplace. This approach to the "capstone" design component of the engineering curriculum also helps smooth the student's transition into professional practice.
