It is shown that the reactive power rating and operating frequency of saturable magnetic components can be extended if the geometry is adjusted to accommodate two fundamental factors. One is related to heat extraction in the core and the other to limitations on the winding height. It is proposed that, by altering the core shape so that only part of the core saturates, less heat will be dissipated. It is qualitatively shown that a core altered in this way still exhibits the necessary characteristics of a nonlinear inductor. Practical results and measurements are given for a 200 VA nonlinear resonating inductor for use in a 20 kVA nonlinear resonant pole inverter.
