In an ATM network, bursty and continuous data are segmented into small fixed-length units called ATM cells. These cells will be the basic unit for the ATM switching network processes. Each cell entering a switching network has associated with it a destination address. The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) aims to create a multiservices integrated network. But can this technique be used in MANs? The interest in such a choice is at least twofold: 1)MAN will have to communicate with the future B-ISDN. If these networks use the same transfer technique, the interconnecting problems will be simplified. 2) Some components could be used both by the two types of networks and by their terminals.This paper proposes further exploration of such a solution. We show how this technique can ensure services required in the MANs,with a special focus on data transmission. More specifically, we examine how the connectionless service can be provided.Titu I. Bajenescu, international consultant, has been engaged in the development and design of advanced telematic systems, and systems integration with LANs, MANs and WANs. On the other side he is a frequent lecturer at universities and international conferences and has a solid background in telecommunications; his prior experience includes reliability andqualityengineering of complex electronic components and systems, especially in the field of advanced telecommunication systems. He holds two patents, is author of many books and papers, and received international managerial citations for his work.
