Wavelet coding has been shown to be better than DCT coding. Thismethod outperforms the DCT JPEG codec and moreover allows scalability. The 2D DWT can be easily extended to 3D and thus applied to videocoding. However 3D subband coding of video suffers from two drawbacks. The first one is the memory complexity required for coding 3D blocks. The second one is the lack of temporal quality resulting in temporalblocking artifacts or flickering when the DWT is performed on temporalblocks. We propose a new temporal scan-based wavelet transform methodfor video coding combining the usual advantages of wavelet coding(performance, scalability), with acceptable reduced memory requirementsand no additional CPU complexity
