The Space Station Freedom electric power system (EPS) will initially rely on photovoltaics for power generation and Ni/H/sub 2/ batteries for electrical energy storage. A discussion is presented of the current design for and the development status of two major subsystems in the PV power module, namely, the energy storage subsystem, comprising high-capacity Ni/H/sub 2/ batteries, and the single phase thermal control system that rejects the excess heat generated by the batteries and other components associated with power generation and storage.
