DVB Next Generation Handheld: The Ultimate Air Interface for Mobile TV

After having published the DVB-H specificationin 2004 and the T2-Lite Annex in the T2 specification DVBin 2011 has now delivered an additional mobilespecification called Next Generation Handheld (NGH). T2-Lite is basically a subset of the overall DVB-T2 specificationwith only very few and small add-ons. Also the basis ofNGH is T2; however, with significant add-ons. T2-Lite hasbeen specifically designed to be implemented easily inalready existing broadcast infrastructure and can be used incombination with T2 fixed broadcast reception. A broadcastnetwork operator can add T2-Lite with marginal costs to analready existing terrestrial broadcast network. NGH on theother side provides the ideal solution for scenarios wherecompatibility to an already existing broadcast network is notrequired. Under these circumstances NGH can providesuperior robustness and/or spectral efficiency as comparedto T2-Lite. NGH combines a wide range of latest codingtechnology and is for sure the most advanced air interfacefor mobile broadcast. This new air interface combined withbigger screen sizes and improved resolution of new mobiledevices like smart phones and tablets could result in anattractive service offering.
