Covering the March 11, 2011 Disaster in Japan

The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred onMarch 11, 2011. As Japan’s sole public broadcaster, NHKmobilized all its manpower and tools to do emergencydisaster reporting to protect people’s life and properties.Our initial actions started, the moment Japan’sMeteorological Agency issued an Earthquake EarlyWarning, after the earthquake occurred, but seconds beforeits jolts reached eastern Japan. We continued emergencyreporting, hours, days and months after that. We will explain,with ample examples and data, how our know-how andequipment, accumulated through our past experiences onemergency reporting, were put to use to report thisunprecedented disaster.
