Over-the-Top (OTT) video delivery is a disruptive changefor television and cable operators. Present TV distributionarchitecture is based on robust yet inflexible satellite andcable technologies. Current implementations only supportTVs with set-top boxes, leaving behind a growing base ofmobile and software-based players. Internet Protocol TV(IPTV) solutions can extend their reach, but lack theunmanaged flexibility and lower cost of true OTT services.New technologies are emerging that enable broadcastqualityhigh-definition TV (HDTV) over the Internet. Thesetechnologies converge easily with the existing cableinfrastructure, without requiring changes to content formatsand workflow, and can turn the Internet into a clear HDvideo on demand or live-broadcast medium, eliminatingstartup delay, buffering, jitter, and frame freeze. Operatorscan use existing broadband ISP connections to integrateseamlessly with end-user set-top boxes, connected TVs, PCsand mobile devices, opening up new opportunities forservices without investing in expensive infrastructure.
