FM-Stereo transmission, employed in worldwidebroadcasting, has been in place since 1961. The system usesdouble sideband suppressed carrier (DSBSC), within themultiplex baseband signal, as means to transport the stereosound field to the receiver. This method, while robust andreliable, is prone to the effects of multipath. This paper willdiscuss an optional method utilizing single sidebandsuppressed carrier (SSBSC) modulation as an alternative forbroadcasters. SSBSC is backward compatible with existingradio receivers. Benefits, which are perceivable to a listener,include: a reduction in multipath induced distortion,additional protection to spectrum used for RBDS, SCA, andHD Radio? signals. There is an additional separate benefitin the receiver, which improves the signal-to-noise ratiowhen SSBSC is transmit and the receiver is designed tocapture the SSBSC signal. SSBSC for FM-Stereo has beendeployed recently, under experimental authorization fromthe FCC, with ongoing testing in the lab, and in the field.
