This paper presents a parametric investigation of a novel method forin-situ hydrogen production, safely and compactly, from the chemicalreaction between aluminum and water (11% hydrogen mass compared to thealuminum mass). Spontaneous and sustained reaction between aluminum andwater is possible due to a special thermo-chemical process of aluminumactivation. A small fraction of a lithium based activator (typically 2.5%)modifies the protective properties of the oxide/hydroxide film on thealuminum particle surface, allowing the water to react with the aluminum.High efficiency of hydrogen production has been demonstrated, about 80% inmost experiments. The work further studies the application in PEM fuel cellsin order to generate green electric energy.
