This paper shows the effect of self-shadowing on the coupled attitude-orbit dynamicsof objects with high area-to-mass ratios (HAMR) in simulating standardmulti layer insulation materials (MLI) as tilted single rigid sheets. Thecoupled orbit-attitude perturbations of solar radiation pressure and Earth gravityfield are taken into account. The results are compared to the attitude-orbitdynamics, when neglecting self-shadowing effects. An averaged physicalshadow-map model is developed and compared to the full self-shadowing simulation.Accuracy considerations are made and the effect of a chosen tessellationis shown.
