Use of Underground Space in a Pristine Watershed: Chester Morse Lake Pump Plant and Intake, North Bend, WA

The design of the Chester Morse Lake Pump Plant and Intake provides a recent example ofthe use of underground space for lifeline infrastructure. An underground pump plant constructed on the sideof a steep slope along Chester Morse Lake provides security, preserves aesthetics, and reduces operation andmaintenance costs when compared to an above ground structure. When completed, the pump plant, pipelineand intake tunnel will access dead storage within Chester Morse Lake to provide drinking water to Seattle, andmeet in stream fish flow requirements at low lake levels.
