Keys to Success in Managing a Complicated Tunnel Project: City of Columbus—Big Walnut Sanitary Trunk Sewer Extension

The Big Walnut Sanitary Trunk Sewer Extension project, completed in the fall of 2009, offersmany lessons learned in terms of a cost-effective approach to managing a tunnel project. Key lessons relateto the use of new technology, claims avoidance and communication with area residents, including 24/7responsiveness. The project consisted of the installation of 9,900 lineal feet of 72-inch sanitary sewer, installationof five access shaft/manhole structures, installation of a tangential inlet drop structure and associated deaerationchamber/appurtenances, as well as the installation of 36-inch sanitary sewer and manholes. The constructionmanagement team encountered many challenges that could have resulted in potential claims situations.
