For the new office building of the Ministries of Justice and Interior Affairs in The Hague thedesign of a working pressurization system was a challenge. The matter of an air release device cameup late in the building process and a shaft had to be added to the building at the moment the concreteof the 19th floor was casted. The small dimensions of the added air release shaft and openablewindows in the building, lead to a design that might be a solution for general known problems withpressurization systems. Such installations are vulnerable to the stack effect during cold weather andsmoke ingress during evacuation when stair doors are opened. The system in this building is designedto keep the pressure difference across the stair door below dangerous levels at all times. The systemset up guarantees an air flow across the door opening on the fire floor as well as when doors on otherfloors are opened during evacuation.
